Mari Smith Gets Sappy

“Social media is about relationships,” quoted Mari Smith at our local LinkedOC meeting last night.

To spammers, internet “morons,” and just the clueless social media marketers who post useless links on other people’s social media streams, that may seem a little sappy.

To the legitimate and successful entrepreneurs using social media authentically to build their fan base, that quote should be pretty obvious, however, it is sometimes forgotten.

In such a technologically-advanced time as ours, we can never forget how business has been built for thousands of years…one business person at a time, making their customers feel heard and appreciated, building long-term friendships which will result in long-term business.

The same holds true now-a-days.

Mari’s new book, “The New Relationship Marketing – How to Build a Large, Loyal and Profitable Network Using the Social Web” will be launching October 25 (get the deets on her website, MariSmith.com), takes the reader through a 9-step program that allows them to build a loyal fan base that will eventually become leads, customers and clients.

Until the book is published, I wanted to share some golden nuggets of information Mari shared with the room last night:

1.  ”There is no technology that can replace meeting someone in person.” My take:  computers make is “safe” sometimes for entrepreneurs, but your business growth will flourish even faster with strategic networking events!

2.  The internet has leveled the playing field for entrepreneurs.  Anyone with a deep knowing and belief in themselves and their cause can utilize technology to communicate their message around the world.

3.  Use first names as you would in person.  A person’s first name is the sweetest sound they will hear.

4.  Work on sharing quality content, consistently before you worry about the quantity of followers.

5.  ”Relationship marketing” = ways you make the person you are connecting with feel important.

6.  Listen, don’t just impose suggestions to your audience.

7.  ”Relationships are the new currency. It’s not about who you know anymore but who knows you”

8.  ’FOCUS = Follow One Course Until Successful’

9.  ’When your emotions run high, your intelligence runs low.’  Don’t hit ‘send’ until you know you are grounded and resolved of any high emotions!

10.  Before you send an update, think — What is your deepest intent? Is it self-serving? Serve others.

Thanks to all my fellow “Tweeters” at the meeting for collaborating on getting these updates together.  I do believe we all captured the most important messages Mari shared last night!
